Sustainable contribution
100% of the energy required for d’ROOT is green electricity.
This is how we contribute to a sustainable Groningen. Continuously and with passion!
Exploit new opportunities in energy supply
Sustainability occupies an important place at Bytesnet. Our ambitions in this regard reach far, very far. This starts with a detailed energy transition for data centers. We switch from fossil fuels to fully sustainable energy sources such as solar and wind energy. Really all possible means are being used to make our physical locations more sustainable. New cooling systems, optimal insulation and a circular approach help in this regard.
Reusing heat
At a data center, the servers are set up in optimally prepared ‘corridors’. These servers use power 24 hours a day and produce heat 24 hours a day. The heat released when cooling the servers and other ICT equipment is removed via a heat exchanger and then upgraded to the desired temperature via an electric heat pump. In the near future Bytesnet wants to supply this heat to WarmteStad, The heat can be reused to heat buildings and homes on Zernike Campus, including of course our own building d’ROOT, and the northern neighborhoods of Groningen.
We speak of ‘sustainable residual heat’ and are proud that we can contribute to a better environment with this.
Advocate heat network
On Zernike Campus in 2017 a start was made with the construction of the Northwest heat grid. Through the heat network, over 10,000 households, businesses and knowledge institutions at Zernike and the residential areas of Paddepoel, Selwerd, Vinkhuizen and Kostverloren will be provided with sustainable heat. In October 2018, the Municipality of Groningen and Water Company Groningen decided that next year (2019) this heat network will be further expanded to the Planetenlaan, Pleiadenlaan and the Dierenriemstraat. Bytesnet is a warm supporter of this kind of good development.
Bytesnet stands behind WarmteStad
WarmteStad is the sustainable utility company of the municipality of Groningen and Waterbedrijf Groningen. For the long term, they offer companies and residents of the city of Groningen reliable, affordable and, above all, sustainable heat (and/or cold) solutions.
More than 1,500 so-called ‘Stadjers’ now receive cooling and heating, including at Europapark and at various locations in Paddepoel and Selwerd. At Zernike, as mentioned, the first part of the heat network has already been constructed.
